Just think how much more fun your commute will be as you speed along on your custom-made electric cycle. Besides being pricy, many electric bicycles on the market today aren’t very high-quality. They may have a pretty well-powered electrical component, but often the materials that make up the actual frame of the bike are cheap, especially on so-called “budget bikes”. While this may be fine if you’re looking to only use the bike occasionally, if you’re planning on any lengthier trips or are hoping to use the bike as an alternative to your car for quick trips to visit friends or family, you’re going to want a bike made of materials that will withstand the test of time.

Creating a custom electric bike yourself can often cost less than the price of one of these budget bikes, and you’ll be sure to get more bang for your buck! Using a conversion kit can also be great because by using a bike you already own, you’ll save money and also be sure that the bike will be up to your quality expectations. You’ll also know that the bike is comfortable and fits your height.

Most electric bike conversion kits contain all of the pieces that you need to take your favourite old cycle to the next level, aside from the battery. That’s where we at Batterino come in! We’re proud to offer a custom-designed line of batteries that can be used for an innumerable amount of applications, and electric bikes are no exception!

So what should you know when choosing what type of battery to use for your bike?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all battery that everyone should buy for their electric bike. Instead, the type of battery that you choose depends on your personal preference and what you’ll be using the bike for. Electric bike batteries usually range from 24 volts to 72 volts, and the more voltage that a battery has, the more powerful it is. This means that higher-powered batteries will be able to reach higher speeds more easily, and lower voltage electric bike batteries, like those with 24 volts, will be more suited for flat ground and slower speeds. The type of battery you pick will overall be up to you, so take a look at the many offerings we have and consider what type of biking adventures you’d like to embark on when deciding which battery to purchase!

If you want to go a little faster, common batteries for general use are 36 and 48 volts. These batteries can reach speeds around 28 mph (45 km/hr) and are great for most daily rides. If you choose to go with a battery that’s more powerful than this, you’ll definitely want to make sure that you have a bike with great suspension, like a high-quality mountain bike, to make sure that your rides are as comfortable as they can be. It’s also important to consider price and size here—the more powerful your battery is, the more expensive it’s going to be, and the more space it will take up on your bike frame.

The other big factor to consider when choosing a battery is the battery capacity. Batteries with higher capacities will allow you to ride farther, while batteries with lower capacities are more well-suited for shorter journeys. 10Ah is the common capacity for electric bike batteries and is great for around-the-town trips, and if you want to increase the capacity, consider going for a 20Ah battery. If you’re not sure what capacity to choose, we recommend playing it safe and going for the higher one. Not only will you be able to make longer trips if you should decide to, but the battery will also stay cooler while running and therefore have a longer lifespan, decreasing your costs in the long run.

Now that we’ve gone through what battery statistics you should consider, it’s time to talk about the kit itself! While at Batterino we don’t sell our own line of electric bike conversion kits, we’re happy to recommend you some of our favourites! They all pair well with our batteries, so you’ll be on the road in no time—just add your favourite bike frame, and you’re off!

Bike kits similar to this one are your best bet if you’re a beginner who’s not looking to break the bank with your conversion. It works with both 36 and 48-volt batteries, so you have your choice of power amount. If this particular kit is hard to find or out-of-stock, don’t worry…most budget electric bike kits are pretty similar, and most come from the same factory. Just look for good reviews and similar contents, and you’ll be on your way!

There is a second type of conversion kit that uses a mid-drive motor instead of the typical motor used on most electric bikes. These are similar to this one. The advantage of using a kit that includes a mid-drive motor is that they allow all of your bike gears to run electrically instead of just one, which can be helpful when cycling in hilly areas. However, these kits are quite a bit more expensive and are more complicated to install on your bike, so they may not be the best choice for your first build.

Overall, electric bikes can be fun, exciting, and a great weekend DIY project that might be easier than you could have imagined! We know the great cycling fun is just on the horizon with the help of batteries from Batterino!
